School of Graphic Communications Management
Ryerson University, Toronto
February 2006

We are initiating a newsletter to keep in touch with the growing number of GCM alumni. We want to let you know what is happening at the school and find out what you are doing. Welcome to our first newsletter.
New Chair for GCM
The School of Graphic Communications Management has a new chair – Dr Abhay Sharma. Abhay has taught and worked in the UK, and for the last four years was teaching at Western Michigan University. Abhay is big into colour – he has written a book on colour management and is a member of the ICC. If you want to talk to him just make sure you say “Delta E” and “Lab” in every sentence. Abhay is building on the school’s existing strengths while developing a research focus. This year’s intake was the largest in the history of the school – GCM now has over 400 students across the program.
Mary Black – Printer of the Year
This year Mary Black was awarded The Printer of the Year Award by Graphic Monthly magazine. Mary made the cover story. We all know the contributions that Mary has made and continues to make to the printing industry and currently she is the school’s Director of Liaisons and Recruitment. Congratulations to Mary, this is an incredibly prestigious honour for her and GCM. We are proud of her. See below details of a party for Mary on May 25th.
New faces at GCM
This year GCM welcomed a new faculty member – Dr Martin Habekost. Before joining Ryerson, Martin worked for Hostmann-Steinberg (he is an inky). Martin is pursuing an aggressive research agenda for the school. In other staffing news – you will now be greeted in our front office by Taras Karpiuk and Marietta Canlas. The school continues to grow and other faculty changes are on the horizon – we are searching for a new faculty member to teach in the school in August 2006 (see the job advert at
Congratulations to Ian Baitz (GCM 90)
Congratulations to faculty member Ian Baitz for completing his Masters degree. Ian achieved a high-distinction in his MEd from University of Southern Queensland, Australia. Ian now has three degrees – BTech (Ryerson), BEd (Toronto), MEd (Queensland). Well done – now he can get back to grading those printing processes assignments!!
Featured alumni – Heather Tryon (GCM 02)
You would have known her as Heather Black….now she is the Marketing Coordinator at Hemlock Printing in Vancouver and has married a Hemlock pressman thus the name change. It’s been almost four years since the move and she has hardly looked back. Heather was in Toronto as her company had been nominated for Most Environmentally Friendly Printer in Canada. During her visit to Toronto she visited GCM and her company picked up two awards that night.
Prufbau replacement
Do you remember that Prufbau press simulator in the basement? It is so old we think Gutenberg used it for his tests! Well we have run out of sticky tape and rubber bands to keep the Prufbau going, so the school applied for and received money to replace the machine. We have bought a sparkling, shiny new device for nearly $100K called the Universal Testprinter that will measure all aspects of paper and ink interactions. Please ask your companies to come to Ryerson to use this new state-of-the art instrument.

Mary’s Farewell and Alumni Reunion – 25 May, 2006
A big GCM alumni reunion and dinner party will take place on 25 May at the Old Mill Inn. The event is to honour Mary’s service to the school and to welcome back alumni from all years. Make sure you buy your ticket – $100. Proceeds go to a scholarship fund in Mary’s name. The venue is at the Old Mill Inn, 21 Old Mill Road, Toronto, M8X 1G5 (near QEW and 427, subway access and free parking). Cocktails 6.00 pm followed by a 4-course dinner at 7.00 pm.
